Andy Blakney

I have been working with metal for nearly fifteen years. I have always been amazed with the ways it can be worked to produce something fluid and graceful. Throughout the years I have learned to combine modern welding techniques and my training in the ancient art of blacksmithing to acchieve this in my own work. I prefer to focus on the shaping of hot metal with an emphasis on hand worked detail.
In my shop I work with home owners, architects and builders to create ornamental and arcitectural ironwork such as railings, gates, lighting and tables. I also enjoy making clocks, toy vehicles, and the occasional sculpture.
I have found that original designs and solid skills bring life into each commission. With every project that comes through my shop, it is my goal to produce an heirloom quality product.

After receiving my BFA from West Virginia University in 1997, I travelled across the country to Washington State, where I fell in love with the natural environment and decided to relocate. Ten years later I still live here in the Seattle area. For eight of the past years, I have worked for various custom metalwork shops. Including custom ornamental works for private homes, as well as a fine art fabrication studio that focuses mainly on public sculptures. In December of 2003, I began my apprenticeship with Master Blasksmith Darryl Nelson in Eatonville, WA. During my three years with him I was able to develop my skills as a blacksmith. Learning this time honored trade has been a huge inspiration to my personal artwork. It has enabled me to create the pieces I design with great detail and craftsmanship and has given me the opportunity to push myself within my style.
Since February of 2007 I have been running my own business full time, creating custom works for private residences and public spaces. My inspiration to work hard and to create beauty with metal comes from the natural surroundings of the Pacific Northwest as well as tropical plants of Southwest Florida, where I have participated in a fundraising event every fall for the past 4 years. I occassionally like to bring a sense of humor into my pieces when possible, while incorporating a finely crafted work of art.
